Information About the Music Educator of the Year Award

Award

March is Music in Our Schools month and to that end, every March HCPSM solicits nominations for the HCPSM Music Educator of the Year award. This is a very prestigious award because teachers can be nominated by their peers, their students, or parents of those students. It shows just how much those around the nominated teacher truly care. The winning teacher is presented a plaque by members of HCPSM and HCPSS administrators.

Time Line

  • February-April:  Nominations Solicited

  • May 1:  Nomination packets should be postmarked or delivered in person. Please see form for further instructions.

  • May 1-6:  Nominations evaluated

  • May 6-10: Visit schools and announce results

Eligibility

Any HCPSS full-time music teacher with three years of full-time experience in Howard County by the time of nomination is eligible to be nominated. Teachers who have received the award may be considered again after five years. Teachers who have been finalists may be nominated again the next year.

Nomination Process

Nominations may be made by anyone familiar with the teacher's work - parents, students, other teachers, site-based or central office administrators, and Board of Education members. Nominations for the current year's award will be received by the posted deadline.

Criteria

Consideration goes to those teachers who skillfully foster individual personal growth in students by enabling each to experience the joy of music as a listener, general classroom student, performer, composer, or in the improvisation and or creation of music.
